Q: What services are included for H+D clients?
A: Our clients receive dedicated proactive investment management along with unlimited financial planning. We review client portfolios quarterly, and provide detailed and timely reports showing performance, allocation, holdings, and recent activity. We reach out often, communicate clearly, and make sure we are always available to provide consultation and advice on whatever financial matters are important to you.
Q: What does a typical H+D client look like?
A: We work with over 400 families and organizations from a wide range of backgrounds and situations, and our guidance is individually developed for each unique client. Often, clients come to us because they are going through a financial transition, such as a family or professional change, retirement, inheritance, or sale of a business.
Q: How do I find out if H+D is a good fit for me?
A: We offer an initial consultation that is free of charge or obligation. After learning about your situation and looking at your financials, we will share initial recommendations and tell you what we can do for you. Then you can decide if you would like to work with us.
Q: How is H+D compensated?
A: We are a fee-only advisor: We charge a percentage of assets under our management, and we collect no other fees or commissions. Since we opened in 1995, we have prioritized keeping fees transparent and well below industry averages. A 2019 annual survey of over 1,350 Registered Investment Advisers found that the average fee for firms like ours was about 1%. Our clients pay an average fee of less than 0.70%.
Q: Are there other fees I need to know about?
A: The only fee we collect is the management fee outlined above. However, if we choose to use funds in your account, the fund companies may charge their own fee. Typically, if we use funds, we select low-cost index tracking funds, which incur a razor-thin additional fee of around 0.06% to 0.15%. In comparison, the average large-cap fund has an expense ratio of 1.45%, according to Morningstar.
Q: Are you a broker?
A: No. We are a Registered Investment Advisor (“RIA”), with a legal fiduciary duty to always act in each client’s best interests. We do not sell products, and we receive zero commissions.
Q: What is your investment process?
A: We invest in individual stocks, bonds, exchange-traded funds, and mutual funds that we select through a disciplined investment process. Our experienced research team searches widely for new ideas, then digs deeper into hundreds of them each year, combing through company financials and reports, management conference calls, industry-specific research, and other resources. We then assess valuation, quality, and risk and select what is compelling.
We use our individual selections to craft diversified portfolios that meet your objectives, and we monitor and manage your portfolios on an ongoing basis according to your changing needs and priorities.
Q: What experience and credentials does the H+D staff have?
A: We are a tightly knit group of investment professionals that work in a collaborative office environment. Multiple members of our team are CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNERS™and Chartered Financial Analysts®. We take our responsibilities seriously and enjoy our work. Please visit Our Team page for more information on each of our team members.
Q: Can you help me with socially responsible investing?
A: Yes, we help clients meet their Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) objectives. We work with clients to define what ESG means to them and call on our investment research to satisfy client wishes.
Q: What are the steps to becoming a client?
A: Once you decide to work with us, we will help you open an account at Charles Schwab, our preferred custodian. We’ll sign an agreement with you that grants us limited power of attorney to execute trades on your behalf. This allows us to manage your account on an ongoing basis, while you retain full access to your funds at all times and receive monthly statements directly from the custodian, along with annually prepared tax documents.
