Retirement Planning
Simplifying the complicated so you can retire with confidence.
Maybe you have assets in different places and a general sense of what you’ve saved, but not much else. Or you need help determining when you can retire and what your budget will be when you do. When it comes to retirement planning, all these scenarios are common—and they’re exactly what we help with at Hanson+Doremus.
How We Work With You
Our Retirement Planning Process
We get your financial picture organized, help you understand where you stand, and build an individualized retirement plan just for you.
Step 1: Get Organized
We help you establish the appropriate accounts, and open new ones if needed.
Step 2: Simplify & Consolidate
Next, we develop a complete picture of your finances by reviewing all your investments, income sources, real estate, liabilities, and other assets—whether we manage them or not. If the situation calls for it, we’ll consolidate your accounts.
Step 3: Understand Your Goals
Through a series of conversations, we learn about you and your goals for the future so we can tailor your financial plan accordingly.
Step 4: Build Your Plan
We bring everything we’ve learned together to analyze your financial situation and build a personalized retirement plan. Then we walk through it with you, discussing different scenarios, answering your questions, and making recommendations on retirement income, investments, Social Security, and other important financial decisions—all with an eye toward tax efficiency.
Step 5: Implementation
Once your plan is in place, we help you turn recommendations into action. We can make changes to your investment portfolio and help identify and address other gaps or issues that may affect your long-term goals. When other professionals—like a CPA or estate attorney—need to be involved, we coordinate with them, so everyone is working from the same plan.
Step 6: Ongoing Guidance
We monitor progress, revisit goals, and adjust your plan as your life circumstances change. Whether you’re retiring earlier than expected, moving, receiving an inheritance, navigating a health event, or simply rethinking priorities, we work with you to revise your plan accordingly.

What We Help You With
Depending on your situation, your plan may address:
Investment management. We develop and manage an investment strategy aligned with your retirement goals, risk tolerance, and income needs.
Social Security and Medicare. We explain how to factor healthcare expenses and benefits into your plan and advise you on when to file.
Cash flow and income. We advise you on withdrawal strategies designed to help your money cover your expenses, now and into the future.
Tax strategy. We work with your CPA to help identify tax-efficient strategies for withdrawals, charitable giving, and other financial decisions.
Family support and charitable giving. Whether you want to help family members or donate to causes you care about, we’ll incorporate this into your plan.
Legacy and estate coordination. We help you see how your financial plan and estate plans fit together, flag any gaps, and coordinate with your other professionals—or recommend trusted ones if you need them—to help keep everyone aligned and moving from planning to action.
